Halloween

Monday, October 31 was Halloween, and I had a great time!  From the haunted house at school to trick-or-treating and fireworks, we had a wonderful day.  The weather held up aside from a sprinkle until 8:00, when it then began to pour!  Despite the bad weather at the fireworks, it was still a stunning display!

Happy Halloween!

Thanksgiving

This Thanksgiving dinner was held at my Grandma and Granddads.  It was delicious!  We ate potato salad, broccoli salad, deviled eggs, peppers, ribs, Japanese chicken, rice, cream filled chocolates, and strawberry cheesecake.  It was a feast!

I had a great Thanksgiving (and a tasty one too)!

Edgar Allen Poe

Last Sunday, just as my family was leaving for church, I noticed a crow sitting in our yard.  I walked towards it, but it didn’t fly away, it just ran.  We noticed that his wing was injured and hanging limp.  He was definitely hurt.

When we returned from church the crow (which was now named Edgar Allen Poe, or Poe the Crow) was still there.  He was puffed up from the cold (he looked quite adorable).  We decided that we would do something to try help him, and we brought over my Grandma, who is quite good with birds.

We managed to get a towel over him and Dad picked him up, after which he was relatively calm (we could pet him).  Grandma checked out his wing and we couldn’t see anything broken, so we assumed it was sprained or badly bruised.  We placed him in a box (covered) while we built a temporary shelter.

Using chicken wire and wooden posts, we made him a shelter complete with a tilted wooden crate, water bucket, and a small tree branch good for climbing.  We released him into the shelter where he promptly hid under the crate.

My family and I will continue feeding and caring for him until his wing has healed enough for flight, and then we will release him.  Already he is showing improvement and is able to flap/jump a couple feet.  I hope Poe continues to get better until he is good as new!

The New School Year

So far we are almost two weeks into the new school year of 2016/2017.  It has been great!  We have begun small projects in many of our subjects, including our first science lab, a paragraph writing assignment, and an integers/measurement math unit.

We elected the new students council, and I am pleased to have received the position of students council president.  We hold meetings twice a week and we are being very productive (as well as having fun). The other council members and I have already begun planning the school’s Halloween celebration.

Cross Country is coming up soon, and we have already started training.  Every day the intermediate class goes on a run for PE, and the whole class is showing significant improvement.  My personal best time is 4:21.

The new school year is off to a great start, and I hope we continue to have an awesome time at school!

Track and Field

Yesterday (June 8) was the district Track and Field meet.  The event was hosted at Sunset Elementary School in Pt. McNeil.  Though is was freezing cold and raining, most everyone had a good time.  The events I participated in were long jump, triple jump, 100 meter run, 200 meter run, and the relay.  This year I am in the age category Peewee (grades 5 and 6).  The categories were Tyke (grades 2, 3, and 4), Peewee (grades 5 and 6), and Bantam (grade 7).

Altogether, I think everyone had a great time.

My French Recipe

For my French recipe I chose to make French toast, an old recipe that dates back to the 4th or 5th century.  French toast was commonly served with game birds or meat.  French toast is also known as German and Spanish toast.  The main ingredients of French toast are bread, eggs, and milk.

I have chosen to prepare a variation of French toast in which the toast is baked, because of the convenience of baking at school instead of frying.

My First Person Point of View Write

I wake up to the warm, fuzzy feeling of being cocooned inside my blankets, I hear the sound of my alarm clock blaring by my head.  With my eyes still half closed, I grope blindly for the snooze button.  My fingers refuse to locate the button, so, desperately, I grasp the cord and pull it from the wall.  The noise stops abruptly.  The silence and the comfort of my bunk bed lulls me into a doze.

In my dreams, I often relive scenes from my life.  I don’t know if this is normal, or just me.  Now, I dream of a day of school from last year, in grade 6.  I sit alone in the back of the classroom.  I know that I will never be included, that I will always be the “weird kid”.

I wake for the second time, unfortunately to my mother shaking me out of my slumber.  I am going to be late for school.  My mother leaves the room to prepare for work.  I drag myself out of bed and stagger to my dresser, my brain subdued by the remnants of sleep.  I groggily choose clothes and dress myself quickly, knowing my chances of making it to school on time are slim.

As I rush out of my room I run my fingers through my long, brown hair, attempting to tame the wild mane.  I throw on my coat and shoes, with no time for breakfast, and race out the door.  All traces of sleepiness has left me.  I am outside the door just as I see the bus pull to a screeching stop in front of my house.  The doors open with a hiss and I mount the steps up into the bus, selecting an unoccupied seat towards the front.

I am relieved that I am not late for the bus, and that I will make it to school on time.  And so begins another day of school.

Gravitational Waves Found!

For many years, nobody has known what gravity is, a force, or a wave.  A century after being theorized by Albert Einstein, scientists have discovered gravitational waves (D news).  This detection was by the twin LIGO interferometers on September 14, 2015.  After over 100 years of searching, it has been confirmed. Gravity is a wave!

Gravitational waves are alike to sound waves (Science Alert).  Gravitational waves are believed to travel at the speed of light. These waves are rumored to be the result of black hole collision.  Because of all the variables (such as traffic) it is difficult for detectors to confirm the prescence of gravitational waves.

Experts are already saying that this discovery is a shoo-in for the Nobel Peace Prize, and this breakthrough is sure to change scientific research forever.
